Leech Lake Opener - May 9,2009

10 am leech lake from adventure north deck

By 10 am, when this photo was taken from our deck, many fisherman and woman had caught dozens of walleye.  A grey day with one real sprinkle, chilly out on the lake, although the catching made for having a great time.  The weather cleared by 5 pm and we are hoping for good weather tomorrow.

We have about 30 guests in right now, most of them fishing in about 16 feet of water off of Pine Point , a hot spring fishing spot.  Other places producing fish are around Goose Island and the Hardwoods of Leech Lake.  Using a shiner and jig or lindy rig drifting and trolling.  Pretty calm winds tucked in behind Pine Point on west side of Trader’s Bay.

walleye on pegsSteve, my husband and the dock boys pictured here, clean all of our guests fish and package them for travel if you prefer.  Leave the fish cleaning to us, Steve is a licensed fish packer and is proud of his no bone walleye filets and Y boned northern pike.

Guests today said each boat was keeping about 50% of what they caught.  Many boats catching 25 or more walleye.  Jumbo perch and northerns were seen in the live well today along with the many walleye.

We have openings this coming week.  Our rate is $40 a person per night with a minimum of four guests.  Our covered protected harbor fee is $25 a day.  We (I should say Steve) will launch your boat, store your trailer, clean the fish, gas the boat and trailer it out for you before you depart.  Can’t beat that with a stick.

Okay, it is getting late (for me) and I am getting punchy, time to sign off and I will post more photos tomorrow.

Current Ice Conditions

Trader’s Bay is about 80% open water today, April 25.  The remaining ice is very dark and slushy, and not expected to hang around for much longer.  Early ice out crappie fisherman should be able to get out early in May.  Shingobee Bay is open and Agency Bay is about the same as Trader’s Bay.  There has been no wind for the last two days, although the ice is disappearing at a fast rate.  No worries about ice for 2009’s Fishing Opener.

We are running new rates for May, for a group of four or more the rate is $40 per person per night with a two night minimum.  We have three cabins left open for 2009’s Opener and throughout May, 1 bedroom @ $150 a night, 2 bedroom @ $160 per night and a 3 bedroom at @ $220 a night.

Do you have a large group?  We also have our reunion homes, Cedars and Shoreview available for various dates through out the month.

Winter Recap

A great winter has just passed by; good ice, great fishing and catching up with family and friends.

Most fish our guests brought in this winter were harvested from the Goose Island and Otter Tail Point area of Leech Lake, about 2 miles from the resort.  A small community of ice fisherman formed each week-end about 300 yards in front of our resort, on the west side of Trader’s Bay.  Fishermen were spread out running parallel with the shoreline up and down the Bay.  Fishing in 16’of water with a minnow and a jig, even perch fisherman were pulling in the walleye.

Steve, my husband cleans all the fish our guests bring in for no charge.  Talk about some nice boneless filets, you can get them at our bait shop.  One week-end he cleaned just over 700 fish in three days.  There is nothing better than happy guests leaving with their limits.

Spring and Summer Outlook

Walleye can be found in the rock area of Pine Point this spring, or travel up to Goose Island or Otter Tail Point.  We are centrally located on Pine Point making it easy to get around the large lake with out burning a lot of gas.

Opener will be great, fisherman will be bringing in their limits of walleye and northern and will have a great time.

Any favorite fishing spots you have fished in the past are going to produce.  If you don’t want to go far, trolling in front of the resort up and down the west side of Trader’s Bay will be hot too.  Use a jig and minnow in the spring until the water temperature reaches 60 degrees, then leeches and nightcrawlers become an effective bait too.

We have a covered protected harbor where your boats will be safe, dry and have electrical hook ups.  The fee is $25 a day or $115 for the week.  When you arrive we will unpack your cars and trucks, bring your luggage and coolers to your cabin, launch your boat (if you like), store the trailer, clean and package your fish for you.  When it comes time to depart we will take the boat out and bring it to your cabin if you need to pack it up.  We offer great service so our guests can get to vacationing as soon as they arrive.  Our goal is to make your day.

January 13 Pine Point of Leech Lake Report

back to Adventure North Resort’s home page

Hard water ice anglers are getting around a little easier this week on Leech Lake.  Remaining cautious of the slush that had developed under the snow cover earlier this winter by staying on plowed roads.  On Trader’s Bay at Pine Point the snow cover has reduced to about 8″ and we have seen trucks navigating through the snow off the plowed roads.  The ice depth is about 20″ in our area.

We have heated ice houses for the guests staying here at Adventure North Resort in front of the resort, the west side of Trader’s Bay, just 300 yards south of Pine Point.  Our guests have been bringing in steady walleye, perch and northern.  Walleye are coming in from about 16 to 18 feet of water using a minnow head and walleye jig.  The perch are in about 12 to 16 feet of water.  Our guests have been using fatheads and a rattler or jig.  The Norhern have been bonus fish while angling in the perch areas.  People still fishing the Shingobee Bay area for crappie and blue gill.   Remember to think light - a light line, small bobber and light tackle.

Some places to get on the lake are Shingobee area, the southwest side of Trader’s Bay, Acorn Hill and Grand Vu Lodge (small fee).  Our resort does have roads plowed for use of our guests.   Fisherman are venturing out a little further on Walker Bay with snowmobiles and ATV’s catching Walleye in 17 to 30 foot depths.

September 24 Fishing Report

back to Adventure North Resort’s home page

With great weather, and more to come, our guests have been enjoying nets full of fish.  The Walleye anglers have been bringing them in from just in front of the resort.  Located on Pine Point of Leech Lake, you don’t have to burn a lot of fuel getting to the fishing hot spots.  Other spots close by producing Walleye are the Grand Vu Flats, north and south of Goose Island and the west side of Trader’s Bay.  Boats are mostly drifting in about 11 feet of water while angling with a jig and minnow.  Fatheads have been working although we are now seeing more rainbows and red tails.  Fish have been plentiful and about half of them in the slot limit, 18″ to 26″.  A bag limit of four, one able to be over 26″.

Jumbo Perch have been 9″ to a couple of 13 inchers in our customer’s live wells.  Mostly found in the Walker Narrows and Sucker Bay, fish for the Perch during the day and catch a couple of Walleye on the way home.

Don’t forget we are open year round with excellent ice fishing.  Heated ice houses (non sleepers) are out in early January in the Grand Vu Flats close to Goose Island.  Roads are plowed for easy access and we will even go out to the ice houses and warm them up and auger the holes for you each morning.  Nothing better that having free fish cleaning in the winter.

August 28 Fishing Report

back to Adventure North Resort’s home page

This week we have had large groups fishing for a variety of species.  Fishing pressure on the lake has relaxed with fewer boats on the water.  Enjoy the clear crisp late summer weather and the solitude of the up north.  We are centrally located on Pine Point of Leech Lake, making it easy to get around the large lake with out burning a lot of gas.  Looking forward to your visit - Steve Krogen, owner.

  • Walleye - Over two dozen keepers in one day coming in from Agency Bay.  Our guests only had to throw back a few that were in the slot limit (18″ to 26″, four bag limit one allowed over 26″).  If you want to go for the trophy walleye to catch and release the Meadows and Hardwoods is the place to be.  Guests are fishing with jigs and fatheads in about 10 to 15 feet of water.
  • Jumbo Perch - if you have been waiting all year to come up and hit the jumbo perch now is the time.  This week we have groups bringing in their daily limit (20 in possession) and keeping only the 10 inch plus size perch.
  • Northern Pike - Guests are finding northern in the shallows of the Walker Narrows and Sucker Bay brining in 25 - 29 inch, 4.5 to 7 ponders.  That’s a fun fight landing large northern in the boat.
  • Muskie - Guests are starting to get ready for the tournament September 4 - 7 on Leech Lake.  We still have a couple cabins open.  Sucker and Portage Bays have produced a couple of 50″ for our seasonal guests, although mostly follows have been seen.  Still waiting for it to break wide open.
